The development:
The Hotel du Golfe has been entirely renovated and transformed to now offer 80 refined and elegant apartments, with a modern, clean cut design. With private terraces or balconies, use of a lovely secluded pool and gardens full of palms, roses, bougainvilleas, jasmine and bonsais to walk through, this little corner of paradise awaits you on the Cap d’Agde. The resort offers a spacious reception area, conference rooms, relaxation areas, laundry facilities, private parking… without forgetting that the beach is but moments away.
The location:
The town of Agde itself is divided into four areas- Agde city (one of the oldest in France) on the River Herault estuary, with Greek remains and winding streets, Le Cap d’Agde with its port and beaches, the Grau d’Agde, a small fishing village and la Tamarissiere, situated in a pine forest by the sea. Agde is known for the distinctive black basalt, which is mined from the nearby extinct volcano of Mont St Loup and used in the local architecture. A prime example is the Cathedral St Etienne. This has lead to Agde being known as the “Black Pearl of the Mediterranean”. The city offers a host of bars, cafes, restaurants, concerts and markets. From Agde, many jaunts are possible, such as escapades to nearby Beziers, Montpellier, all manner of seaside resorts and even Spain, which is less than 2 hours away.
Activities:
All manner of activities take place in Agde- excursions and walks, cycling, tennis, horse riding, fishing and sailing. There is also a bridge club and a golf club. In the old town, one can explore churches and cathedrals, as well as many museums. The “petit train du Cap”, a little red train, takes you around the area with historical commentary and theatre, sightseeing boats explore the coastline, and one can even discover cellars and wine estates. For nature lovers, the Bagnas National Nature Reserve, which forms an eco-system between land and sea, has many species of wildlife which can be spotted during guided tours.
Local food and gastronomy:
Fresh local produce include oysters and mussels from the Etang de Thau, the sweet onion of Lesignan-la-Cebe, figs, honey, meats, melons, peppers...
Specialities include the petit paté de Pezenas, a sweet and salty spool shaped pastry, croustade of Bessan (a flaky pastry with chocolate and walnuts or raisins, turbot “eau sel” (with water salt) and bourride (a garlic monkfish stew).
There are also good wines on offer, such as Clairette du Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc, Picpoul de Pinet, Pézenas or Grès de Montpellier
